Abstrak

This article examines the practice of jahr (audible) and sirr (silent) dhikr
after the obligatory prayers through textual hadith analysis and a living
hadith study at Masjid Ar-Rahmah, STDI Imam Syafi’i Jember. It
addresses three questions: (1) which hadiths relate to jahr and sirr
dhikr after the fard prayers; (2) how the congregation and academic
community respond to these hadiths; and (3) how dhikr is practised
after the fard prayers in this mosque. Using a qualitative descriptive
approach, the study combines documentary research on classical
hadith sources and scholarly works with field data from observation
and semi-structured interviews with eight informants (imam, muazzin, lecturers, students, and mosque staff). The findings show that
authentic hadiths support audible dhikr after the obligatory prayers, particularly in its pedagogical role, while other textual and contextual
indications highlight the virtue of silent dhikr. At Masjid Ar-Rahmah, most respondents favour sirr dhikr for reasons of focus and comfort, yet still acknowledge jahr dhikr within reasonable limits and non- collective form as a sunnah based on evidence. The study concludes
that jahr dhikr with correct pronunciation and a slightly raised voice is
emphasised immediately after the fard prayers, while sirr dhikr remains
recommended at other times.
